Echoes of the Sacred Mountain

“Echoes of the Sacred Mountain” introduces us to Witzil Ha Village, a Q’eqchi Maya community approximately 40 miles from Punta Gorda Town, Belize. Witzil Ha is surrounded by beautiful mountains, which are used for farming. Most of the men are subsistence farmers, and they all have land that they use to provide food for the family. Women weave cuxtales (bags) and baskets and make clay pottery. This village is home to Lucas, a young Q’eqchi man, and we follow him as he learns the value of his Maya heritage and traditional culture.

The episodes consist of brief moments of Lucas’ daily life. It follows his youthful rebellion, when he feels ashamed of his culture, through a process of revelation as he comes to understand the value of his heritage. Elements of traditional and contemporary Maya life are discussed such as fajina, or community work, relationships between people and nature, respect for ancestors, the importance of traditional medicine, and even modern political struggles.

Roots, Identity, and Maya Cosmovision

Twenty-five episodes of the radio series “Roots, Identity and Maya Cosmovision” were produced in 2009 and 2010. These episodes were transmitted in Yucatec Maya through the broadcaster XENKA “The Voice of the Grand Mayan Town” as part of the Commission for the Development of Indigenous Towns (CDI) in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, Quintana Roo.

The radio series encourages reflection and recognition of the history of the Maya ancestors and the local community’s historical and cultural importance in Mexico and the world. Episodes focused on themes of cultural heritage and preservation, including archaeological remains, music, traditional medicine, traditional knowledge, and the importance of caring for the environment.
